I have signed on to be a mentor for the upcoming academic year.

My mentee is from Spain.

I will show him around town, take him to parties, bars, etc. Probably encourage him to break American laws. I will learn his class schedule and avoid seeing him around the law school at all costs. Any questions about law school will be answered in vague, noncomittal terms. Ideally he'll suspect that I'm not a student at all; that it's a weird American con.

If my plan doesn't work out I intend to gain full Spanish fluency by year's end.

9-11 CONSPIRACY

With all the conspiracies swirling around 9-11, any kernel of conspiratal truth is likely to be lumped with the inane and consequently disregarded. A reasonable person hears a claim that the four hijacked airliners "never existed." This claim will be treated with skepticism. However, more plausible claims will meet the same level of skepticism. I think conspiracy theories' plausibility should always be analyzed with Ockham's razor. If a "conspiracy" theory is simpler, and deals with fewer hypothetical assumptions and entities than the "official" explanation, it should be taken very seriously. On the other hand, the more Rube Goldberg a conspiracy becomes, the less likely it actually took place. More things can go wrong, and there are more people who can bring down the house of cards.

Which is a simpler explanation? The Bush Administration . . .

(a) ignored urgent intelligence that a terrorist attack was imminent.

(b) designed and executed the attack.

Ignoring intelligence that the World Trade Center and Pentagon would be attacked is relatively simple. A calculation, perhaps unspoken, is made that such an attack will catapult the administration into dizzying heights of popularity and allow for tremendous political opportunity. The beauty of this "conspiracy" theory? Nothing needs to be done on part of those involved. Intentional ignorance and inadvertent oversight leave an identical paper trail. "Nobody could have imagined the attacks of September 11."

On the other hand, using laser imaging, faking flight manifests (and faking scores of victims' families), setting up explosives in the World Trade Center, shooting missiles at the Pentagon, etc. would be prohibitively messy and prone to exposure.

Anyway, there's a niece piece on Salon about flaws in some of the competing theories, and a link to a site that articulates the "red herring" theory a lot better than I'll ever able to do.

I'm watching "Waterworld" right now. It was $5.50 at Target. It compliments "Gigli" and "K-Pax" nicely in my DVD collection.

Key points of interest:
(1) Scrap paper is very valuable in Waterworld.
(2) Dirt is like gold. It's because you need dirt to grow food, and there is no dry land.
(3) Cigarettes are also very valuable. (I think if the Smokers, led by Dennis Hopper, put their minds to it, they could quit. Then they would have more money for dirt and paper.)
(4) Kevin Costner's character is part fish.

I made some tacos today with pulled chicken cooked in hot sauce. They were so spicy I had to throw them away. My beverage was a pint of Mylanta.

Meeting on Sunday to discuss the two most recent posted Property exams from J.T. Younger. (Priceless.) I would prefer to do it laterish, as I haven't attempted either one yet and I have a show + BBQ tomorrow, meaning I will have to do both of them on Sunday. How does 7 or 8 sound? Am I crazy? Is that "house" time for you guys? If we have to do it earlier that's OK; I just might not be fully prepared.

Although I'd rather not meet at the law school, it's probably the best bet in terms of central location, etc. I live alone but I'm pretty far out of the way.

Movie review: Inventiveness crushed under lumbering 'RV'
Film is a long, painful ride for Robin Williams fans.

Jeff Daniels, Robin Williams and Cheryl Hines in "RV"

In the family comedy "RV," he plays Bob Munro, a mousy soft-drink executive who is the office doormat. He's holding onto his job by his fingernails while his bullying boss, Frank (Tony Hale of TV's "Arrested Development"), grooms a younger, cheaper toady. Bob squeezes out clammy, unconvincing smiles whenever he has face time with the top man, but his eyes show that he's desperate to curl into an armadillo-like defensive posture.

Bob insulates his wife and grumpy, snappish son and daughter from anxiety by hiding his job worries. His pretense backfires when Tony demands that Bob be in Denver for business on the dates he was planning a Hawaii family vacation. Concealing the reason for the sudden change of plans, Bob piles everyone in a colossal rented RV and insists that they drive to the Rockies instead. The odyssey is a wearying, bumpy ride, for the dysfunctional Munros and audience alike.

Under the direction of Barry Sonnenfeld ("Wild, Wild West"), the picture lumbers along like a slow-moving vehicle delivering outdated comedy. It's bad enough that Bob's son dresses like a rapper, but allowing Williams to do a "yo, dawg" monologue is unforgivable. There is a sad inevitability about the family's misadventures, from invading raccoons to a broken parking brake to their prickly encounters with the Gornickis, an all-too-neighborly clan that wants to be good buddies with the Munros.

It's painful to see Williams, a famously inventive cutup, stuck in a film that finds humor in a man covered in liquid poo or clinging to the windshield wipers of a runaway vehicle. There already is an actor for such roles and his name is Tim Allen.

The actors mug as if their limp material was gangbusters, but few in the audience will be fooled. Most will agree with Bob's pouty daughter Cassie (Joanna "JoJo" Levesque) as she wonders why the over-friendly Gornickis stick to them like flypaper.

"Why do they even like us?" she wails. "We're not that appealing." How true. How very true.

"Good Night and Good Luck" was okay. It felt contained and controlled, avoiding the biopic pitfall of sprawling deification. (e.g., "Ray").

"JFK" was embarrasingly bad.

This is a very cheap way to get to Chicago from other Midwestern cities. Tickets start at $1, convenience fee is 50 cents. A roundtrip from Minneapolis for $3 total sounds like a pretty sweet deal. I could buy two McChickens while I'm in Chicago and only spend $5.

Next thing I knew I was wandering around on the street without any of my shit, and I had made a bunch of phone calls. Eventually I found my friends. Later that night I spend hours staring at a wall.

Saddam Hussein is the only non-monarch, non-Pope head of state (at least that I can think of) who is almost universally referred to by his first name.

Excepting the current administration, talking heads, and tabloids, even more established and journalistically credible organizations (i.e. NPR, Wall Street Journal, CNN, etc.) refer to Saddam Hussein not as "Hussein," but as "Saddam."

How did this practice take hold? The effect certainly seems perjorative. A kooky conspiracist might claim there was a plot to turn the public against him through this practice, but I think it might be a little less orchestrated than that. Come to think of it, the practice has a warm, cuddly effect.

In any event, please share your thoughts. I am perplexed.

In what direction should this blog go?

I don't need a forum to share my thoughts on movies, books, or music.

My personal life isn't terribly interesting. I am in school and I don't date.

However, I slipped up and hinted at my political leanings recently: oops. It got me thinking, though. So here's more:

Democrats

Contrary to popular belief, Democrats are the majority of the United States' population.

At every point left of dead-center on the political spectrum, though, individuals distrust and demonizes one another. Leftists look upon the Democratic party with mocking disapproval, and center-leaning Democrats either ignore or write off the far left.

However, it's hunky-fucking-dory when you get right of dead-center. Do you think George F. Will finds southern Evangelicals to be kidnred spirits, or vice versa? Hell. Naw. Everyone in the Republican tent gets their little piece of the pie, be it supply-side economic policy, neoconservative war games, faith-based initiatives, or tokenist homophobia. So they all turn out and elect these guys, all the while turning a blind eye to the remainder of the policies that they either disagree with or don't understand.

Everyone who isn't part of the above equation should take note. Wishy-washy soccer mom Democrats who are married to Republican dudes need to find some commonality with aging hippies, as well as the academic set, the ABA, liberal college kids, anarcho-leftists, pro-Choice activists, environmentalists, people who actually understand foreign affairs, and so on.

Policy does not need to be formed to appease these different groups; it should just be made clear that Democrats are the best thing going for any of the respective causes, that the leadership is conscious of these causes, and political inaction will compromise these causes considerably. For example: the environment won't be fixed with a Democratic president, but at least the Democrat won't actively work to make it worse. It's not the Revolution, but it's as close as you're going to get at any macroscopic level.

The 2008 Democratic presidential ticket: Mark Warner/Barack Obama.

Warner had an 80% approval rating in a conservative state, and he fixed a big-ass budget mess. No Congressional baggage. Would almost certainly carry Virginia, and might do well throughout the South. Quoting Dan Rather, "Ballgame."

Anwyay, Kerry, Clinton, and Gore all have super-high negative ratings. Edwards was already on a losing ticket. Biden is sleep-inducing. Vilsack sounds like a venereal disease. Evan Bayh is Joe Lieberman II, sans the Joe-mentum.

The Democratic base would collectively wet their pants if Obama was on the ticket, plus he would probably bring in voters from the far left and center who might otherwise be disinterested in voting Democratic. He has repeatedly said he won't seek or accept the Vice Presidential nomination. However, this has NO BEARING on what he will actually do. What is he going to say? "Yeah, I'd love to be Vice President!!" It would be like Sean Young's pursuit of Catwoman.

2008 Republican ticket: Mike Huckabee / (some moderate; maybe McCain, maybe a woman or minority)

McCain will spend the next two years trying to undo any bipartisan moves he's made to un-offend party insiders. Probably a little too little and a little too late.

Giuliani is pro-choice.
Condaleeza Rice does not merit a comment.
Frist is a joke.
Brownback = Bob Dole 2.

Huckabee will get the Evangelical crazies out as well as appeal to the northern suburban types. He lost a shitload of weight, too, and has a cool book. Tight with the party.

Slipping a token woman or minority on the ticket might gain some of the center, but will probably only happen if the Democrats are far ahead with burbanites. This move might backfire and turn off the creepy 10% who would balk at non-white male veep candidates... McCain seems like a fine compromise.

As a child, my mother took me to an Italian barber in an inner-ring suburb west of Chicago. I spent long Saturday mornings awaiting my haircut. AM radio ranged from Mel Torme and Frank Sinatra to the soft-rock hits of Neil Diamond.

As a teenager, I began to cut my own hair. The results were alarming.

As a relocated young adult, I have generally frequented a national chain. Last week, my stylist struck up a conversation in heavily accented English.

"What did you do today?"

It was approaching 7 pm. I thought for a moment, and realized I had done nothing at all. I woke in the early afternoon and ate. Where does the time go?

"I've done nothing today. I can't say I've done anything."

So I brought up the topic of my slowly disappearing hair, to which my stylist responded, "Oh, I don't care about that. You have curly hair, and you need to use gel to control your curls."

She received a 45% tip.

The drummer from the Simple Minds is a scientologist.
Well, while I was in Copenhagen I was told I had to do a whole lot more training to be even worthy of being anywhere near L.Ron Hubbard. I would get trained in Copenhagen then get sent off. The berthing was in the Via Kochsvej at the Sea Organization's staff house. It was anything but "elite". In our dorm, which measured about 12 feet by 12 feet there were 13 beds! I hated that, as I was accustomed to having my own space. There was only 1 bathroom for about 25 people. Mornings were hell. The food was pretty awful too. Greasy and crude, we got to often eat beans and rice if the week's production statistics were lower than the previous week's levels. Yuk. There were also some horrible incidents where Sea Organization newbies (had only just signed their BILLION YEAR CONTRACTS to serve L.Ron Hubbard (yes, a billion; that's not a typo) were verbally and physically abused in a highly degrading manner by the "Commanding Officer" Judy Speer. For the new recruits "compliance" was everything. I had not signed a Sea Org contract, just a 5 year staff "contract" in Paris.

Exams, Part Two

I decided to hit up some exam prep, as follows.

I saw punk last night and drank. Then I got on the bus and drank more at a bar.

Three hours of sleep and back on the bus.

A "practice" exam after drinking and sleeping very little is comparable to putting weight on a baseball bat in the on-deck circle. It makes for a challenge. When the weight is removed, the bat feels light. You can do anything.

When I don't drink the night before my real exam, and get more than three hours of sleep, I will be invincible.

I like to see concerts on a regular basis. I enjoy being an active member of the scene.

The boiling stigma attached to "the scene," raging throughout the late 1990's, has simmered considerably.

Transportation

To get from A to B, I drive a car, I ride the bus, I use a bicycle, and I walk.

Cars are very fast, but they are sometimes expensive to park, and shouldn't be driven drunk.

Buses are erratic. But you can sleep or read on a bus.

Riding a bike in the winter is risky if you have a computer. One false move and the computer breaks.

Walking is relaxing, but very slow. Good when you have time on your hands.

Exams

To be a law student at a public land-grant university in the upper midwest . . . Oh! This is the life.

Lots of people choose to study for their exams, and I think they are getting themselves worried. The tension surrounding me is at a fever pitch. Veins are popping; everyone is sweating.

Persecution seems to be the flavor of the minute. Do people have it rough?

Difficulty of one's life = x.
Talking about the difficult one's life = y.

x = -y

On the topic of studying for tests? Well, it's sufficient to say that I remain focused on my broad range of outside interests.
